One of my most favorite jobs as a photographer is when I get asked to to do menu and marketing images for a new restaurant. As a hobbyist epicure I love good-looking food just as much as I love good-tasting food. So being asked to photograph a professional chef’s creations allows me to be a professional foodie without having to open my own restaurant!
What made this particular jobs even more exciting was that it was for the new restaurant at Cobble Creek in Montrose. Cobble Creek has a long record of hosting some amazing restaurants so, while I was sad to hear the the old place was gone, I was very excited to try out the new place.
New Investors had imported a head chef and general manager team from Vail, Colo., to run the new Creekside Restaurant. While the two seemed eager to leave the resort town behind them, it was obvious that they were bringing the same class and professionalism to dining in small-town Colorado. The dining area was elegant and modern and had a small lounge area that was decorated with Clint Eastwood and other Western-movie memorabilia. When I arrived, the chef was hard a work in the kitchen preparing an array of one-of-a-kind menu items for me to photograph.
This is where things get interesting during a restaurant shoot. The photographer wants to take their time with each dish and make sure they highlight the unique colors and textures in an appetizing way. The chef, on the other hand, is trained to finish twenty dishes at the same time so that they can be served immediately.
We often joke about going into a restaurant and ordering everything on the menu, but it is actually quite overwhelming when you are served everything on the menu!
Still, it looked great and was equally delicious!
