Brittany’s family home was abuzz with activity when I arrived early Saturday morning. Bridesmaids in matching robes frantically brushed each others hair and applied heavy coats of eyeshadow. Siblings zipped around the house collecting cufflinks, corsages and other wedding accessories. Cell phones buzzed and beeped with messages about last-minute details . All the while Brittany smiled calmly. She was more than confident about the man she was about to marry.
Caleb and Brittany met through school sports when they were both in elementary school and remained friends through high school. As high school seniors the two started dating and quickly realized that they belonged together. Now, both at the age of 20, they were tying the knot and there was not a doubt in anyone’s mind that it was meant to be.
They had planned a traditional wedding at the Montrose United Methodist Church and did not want to see each other until the ceremony, but they still wanted to pray together before hand. When Brittany and Caleb met in the church basement, divided by a closed door, to hold hands and pray I was touched. It was one of the most genuine and touching moments that I have witnessed as a wedding photographer. They were both so in the moment with each other that they seemed to forget about me and the few other onlookers.
The ceremony began with the ringing of church bells and both Brittany and Caleb’s parents played significant roles in starting it off. The sermon was thoughtful and the couple read their vows, exchanged rings and were pronounced “husband and wife.” As they raced out of the church there was much applause.
A mid-morning reception was held at the Montrose Pavilion. There was a catered lunch, a beautiful cake and a virgin mimosa toast to the young couple who could not yet legally add champagne to their orange juice. Brittany took turns dancing with her father and each of her four brothers. When all six of them wound up dancing together tears welled in her mothers eyes.
I was able to sneak the couple away for some super sweet photos in the nearby Montrose Botanical Gardens. It was clear to me then that Brittany and Caleb truly shared a special connection.
